THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT: Human rights Romania-European Parliament: Fierce protests against the provisions laid down by the Ceaucescu Regime in violation of the Helsinki act subscribed also by Romania.

Strasbourg, 17 November 1989

The resolutions presented by the European Parliamentarians of the Green Party. The case of Don Pietrescu (on hunger strike from 1 October) and fasting unto death of Doina Cornea.

Strasbourg, 17 November - N.R. - The European Parliamentarians of the Green Party, Adelaide Aglietta, Gianfranco Amendola, Virginio Bettini, Enrico Falqui, Alex Langer, Eugenio Melandri, Marco Taradash and Paul Staes presented two resolutions on the situation in Romania. The first referred to the general situation in the country where there are no signs of change, in the democratic sense, where repressive and authoritarian measures and behaviour still exist, where there is a continuous and systematic violation of the subscribed international accords, last of which was the CSCE (Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe) act of Vienna, subscribed also by Romania, on 15.1.1989. Where, despite international protests, the Ceausescu regime continues its work of destroying villages.

During the Strasbourg session next week, Adelaide Aglietta will present the urgent case of Don Petrescu, on hunger strike to protest against the violation of human rights committed in Romania. The regime seems to be concetrating on him in a specific way: they fired him, do not allow him to leave the country to be cured of a tumour afflicting him. For this reason he is on a hunger strike since 1 October. He has been under arrest from 30 October, no news has been available about him, and he has probably been subjected to forced nutrition: in his support, Doina Cornea has been on strike upto death, until Don Petrescu is freed. We would like to recall that Adelaide Aglietta, with the European Parliamentarians of the Green Party has proposed Doina Cornea for the Sacharov Prize, instituted to award personalities who have distinguished themselves in the field of human rights.
