RADICALS ELECTED TO THE ITALIAN PARLIAMENT: Europe: Unanimous approval by the congress on the motion on European policy promoted by the radical congressman and undersigned by all leaders, which comits the Italian Government to support the construction process of political unity in Europe as well as a convocation of the government representatives of the Euopean peoples.

Rome, 15 November 1989

The congress has unanimously approved the motion presented by all the partyleaders - promoted and most determinately supported by the Radical Party - that has committed the government to support the construction process of political unity in Europe. It also refers to, among other things, the convocation of the government representatives of the European peoples, i.e. a large assizes promoted by the European Parliament with the participation of the elected members of national Parliaments in member countries of the Community with delegations of Parliament of west and eastern Europe who are participating at the Assembly of the Council of Europe, in observer status.

The congress also approved almost unanimously two resolutions presented by Calderisi and Rutelli repectively, who have committed the government, first, to request the immediate attribution of the mandate to draw up the new treaty for European Union or the United States of Europe to the Italian Parliament, at the next European meeting, in keeping with the outcome of the referendum held in Italy on 18 June; the second to promote a series of initiatives in defence of the environment.

In the declaration of votes for the European Federalist Group, Peppino Calderisi expressed immense satisfaction for the approval of these documents. "In the light of the great events taking place in Central and Eastern Europe, it is in fact urgent that the European Community offers itself and to countries interested in the prospect of a wider integration and European unity, a model of credible democratic policy and institutions that are effectively democratic, thus exceeding the serious democratic deficit of present communitary institutions."
