HAVE JOINED THE PARTY

Ivan Girev

forester, Kirovskaja Oblast, USSR

TOLERANCE TOWARD ALL IDEOLOGIES

Why did I decide to join the party? I am an all-out opponent of violent methods to solve any problem. The Radical Party is the party of the future world community, a human and developed community. The Radical Party contains the compassion, the tolerance toward all ideologies. Its supreme objective is that of upholding the rights and the liberties of man, and not the achievement of abstract ideological dogms. The Radical Party tries to create a world community void of wars and conflicts, basing itself on dialogue and nonviolent methods for the solution of all the problems of mankind. It is a libertarian, progressivist party, and I consider it an honour yo be part of it and to contribute to the achievement of the idea of world community.

HELPING THE RADICAL PARTY

Already back in 1989 I wanted to join the Radical Party, but then I chose the MSZDP (Social Democratic Party). After all, this has not been a bad choice, because I don't want to reject my status as a worker, and because the MSZDP's three mottos - Justice - Solidarity - Freedom - are the goals of my life. (Unfortunately, in our party the latter motto is not considered valid by Mrs Petrasovits - President of the MSZDP - and by her comrades). At the moment, I believe your party is close to the above objectives, even if I know very little your program (I would be glad if you could send it to me). I have decided to join the party and to help it. I am sending you my membership fee by mail.

UP-TO-DATE

Like last year, I am joining the Radical Party because I consider it an organization which, based on nonviolence, enables to uphold human rights. In the current political situation, the aims and the tasks of the Radical party become more and more up-to-date. I wish you success in our common cause.

A LABORATORY FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FUTURE

(...) What is the Radical Party today? It is a laboratory, in which there are positions which I consider wrong positions, such as those held some time ago (...) on the occasion of the intervention (in the Gulf), and at the same time a situation of open debate which makes it possible, today, to present this highly effective motion against the arms trade. Well, what is the meaning of a radical party such as this? According to the intuition launched over three years ago, this radical party is useful to construct the future. There must be a table in which forces that come from different cultural and political experiences can sit down to discuss the future. This future cannot be built in the context of a traditional party which competes (...) to gain votes. It can be built only in a context which is programmatically removed from the Italian electoral competition, and becomes a transparty. It then becomes a movement in which, without being suffocated by others who would draw interests for the electoral competition

, it is possible to discuss and talk about the future. This is the interesting aspect. I know it is a difficult aspect, I know that Teodori and Negri don't like these things. And this is the reason why I have chosen to join the Radical Party again and I have noticed (...) that Pannella and the others carry out this project of a transpartisan, transnational Radical party with determination and at times facing strong clashes - interesting clashes (...). It seems to me that if we want to preserve this project, which I continue to consider valid, then we cannot just look out of the window and see who wins (...).

CLOSER TO THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY

This is the first time I join a political party. I am a 48 year-old highly qualified physician. (...) Given that the Radical Party does not want to judge the past or resemble it, I believe this transnational organization should have a force which, as an opposition, can control the decisions taken in parliament, because these are the decisions that will lead us closer to the European Community. For the moment, this is all I wanted to say. I will perhaps say more once I have acquired more experience. I am herewith sending you my membership fee.

Ivo Magi

FROM A LABOR CAMP

I read your statute and I approve of it. I wish to join your party, and become a fully-fledged member. There will be difficulties (*) concerning my membership fee, because here in the camp we are not allowed to keep any money. My fee can be sent only through my parents. (...). I have been sentenced to five years of prison for desertion from the occupation forces - this is how I consider them - of my country. I feel no remorse for what I did. I carry out different activities: driver, painter, welder. However, once I have finished serving my sentence, I would like to enter university, and attend the faculty of economy. In addition to my mother tongue (Estonian), I speak Russian, Finnish and a little English. I belong to no other party. I was born in 1967.

(*) The radical comrades of Moscow solved the problem by collecting the money for Ivo's membership fee.

UNTYING THE BONDS THAT LINK US TO THE PAST

The values that are present in the conception, administration and strategy of this party are similar to the values of my personality, which says yes to life.

The political structures link us to the end of the Middle Ages, and this is particularly evident here in Eastern Europe. In this world, it is not enough to "announce" the future, the United States of Europe. We need to unfasten this world - clearly not with physical means - from the ties that link is to the past, that manifest themselves in the conflicts between ethnical minorities, or rather in the conflicts between the national States and the minorities. We need to arm this world with those concepts and opinions that make pluralism and tolerance as a way of living possible. (...). By renewing my membership, I want to support this idea.

THE PARTY OF THE FUTURE

By renewing my membership to the Radical Party, I wish to underline how attractive its principles of freedom and humanism are. The party's strong intellectual potential also inspires respect. As to my opinion on its program, I repeat: "the Radicals are the party of the future".
