Dear friends,
if the news coming from the "world", from ex Yugoslavia to the ex Soviet empire, from Haiti to Zaire, are very often tragic, if the the answers given to these challenges by the West and by E.C. Europe especially are ever more deceitful, we are nonetheless starting, after months of often unacknowledged work, to obtain results on some of our proposals, as well as significant adhesions to our project, the Radical project of the "New Party".
But let us proceed by order. As you may remember, at the end of August, when the Soviet coup had fortunately failed, the Radical Party launched an appeal for the abolition of the death penalty in the Soviet Union. To date, more than 250 parliamentarians from all over the world and as many personalities in all fields have endorsed this appeal. And there's more. With every new day, dozens more decide to give their support, while the appeal gathers momentum. Each person can contribute, by contacting the parliamentarians or personalities of his choice directly and by inviting them to sign the text of this appeal, which you will find herewith enclosed together with the list of first signatories.
On the front of ex Yugoslavia, after several attempts from within the European Parliament and from several Western parliaments to convince the major political leaders of E.C. Europe to acknowledge the coup d'état which has been carried out in ex Yugoslavia and consequently to recognize Slovenia and Croatia at once, we have decided, at the conclusion of our Federal Council, to multiply our nonviolent initiatives. These include the organization of the second session of our Federal Council in Zagreb at the end of this month, the presentation in as many parliaments as possible of the motion passed by the Federal Council (the text of which you will find herewith enclosed) and other initiatives which we are still defining. Here too, each one of us has the burden and the responsibility of convincing the greatest number of parliamentarians, and of becoming promoters of this motion in their respective parliaments, writing to them, contacting them by telephone, sending them telegrams, calling on them personally...
In all this, there are quite a few encouraging elements, starting with a number of prestigious adhesions to our party, such as the adhesion of European Commissioner Carlo Ripa di Meana, Zdravko Tomac, vice prime minister of Croatia, Carlo Tognoli, Italian minister for tourism and culture, Zoran Thaler, vice foreign minister of Slovenia, Vladimir Moskovka, member of the Parliament of Ukraine, Anton Lintzmaier, Anton Nicolau and Gheorghe Raducanu, members of the Rumanian parliament, Mario Raffaelli, Giorgio Cardetti and Carmine Nardone, members of the Italian parliament. To these we must add the adhesion of the over thirty members of the European Parliament, of the Supreme Soviet, of the Italian and Czech Parliament who are already members of the Radical Party.
There is no time to waste. It is necessary to boost this positive trend now, by joining the Radical Party at once. This is your task, the task of all those who are reading this letter, the task of those who have already joined as well as of those who have not yet done so. We hope you will decide to mobilize, and wish you a very profitable work.
