- Mr President, today's debate signifies a very important and historic event, not only for Ireland but also for the principle of world peace, based as it is on dialogue, a consensus and a genuine recognition of the dignity and the rights of European citizens. We thank you, our European partners, for sharing in this significant event with the people of Ireland, and we urge you to continue supporting our cause which, of course, is also the cause of humanity worldwide. European unity would be a sham if it did not actively encourage and help to achieve harmony within Member States of the European Union. Genuine peace can only be built on a foundation of trust and unity of minds and hearts of all our citizens. Peace is a prerequisite to economic and social progress. Conflict is a waste of resources, both human and physical.

In conclusion I would like to join in complimenting John Hume for his tremendous commitment to securing peace throughout the island of Ireland, and also our Prime Minister, Albert Reynolds, who has provided such excellent leadership in this particular area also.

(Applause)
