Subject: Definition of regions

With regard to the unsatisfactory response given to Question 47 (H-0310/94), would the Commission please state the basis upon which regions have been defined in England, the criterion applied, the parties consulted and, if any, the criterion by which any parties consulted have been chosen?

What action will the Commission take given the proposals currently being considered by the Local Government Boundary Commission, which effectively abolish the Counties of Avon, Somerset and Devon with a possibility of further reviews and the creation of a mixture of unitary and two-tier authorities in the West Country?
