Commissioner, I am totally unclear where we stand on this. It is quite clear from the report referred to in my question and that the Commissioner referred to, that British competition policy has completely failed to protect consumers' interests in this area. There have been very high rises not only in prices but in directors' salaries and in dividend payments made to shareholders. So a dominant market position is obviously there.
In the Commission's own document which is available in this building, "Competition Policy in the European Community", it mentions that dominant positions are a key area that the Commission will look at and that it should affect all companies. Indeed, water companies are specifically mentioned on page 4 as being of European interest in terms of competition policy.
Is the Commission intending to take this investigation further forward from this evening?
