Mr President, human rights abuses in Burma is an issue that has concerned this House, alas, over the past five years and more. In particular, we also deplore the illegal house arrest and detention of Mrs Suu Kyi. She became the holder, in this very House, of the Sakharov prize some few years ago.
While it may be gratifying that a meeting was at long last held between Mrs Suu Kyi and representatives of the military regime in Burma, the hard fact remains that she continues to be detained. That we most certainly deplore as a Group but there are, as has been said by Mrs Kinnock and others, a good many other prisoners held in Burma. We are glad to be associated with the other political groups in calling for their release.
