I am sure, as the President-in-Office is aware, that there is a genuine concern that one of the consequences of the Japan/US deal is that European Union exporters will be discriminated against. There is a fear that pressure was put on Japanese importers to be biassed in favour of importing US goods. Certainly, while I appreciate that the Council may not have had time to digest this particular agreement I would like an assurance that it will take a very firm stance against any discrimination against our exporters and, secondly, that it will seek a third-party involvement in the monitoring of the implementation of the US/Japan agreement to ensure that no discrimination does take place.
