I wonder if the President-in-Office will agree that even if the Council chooses not to take any action over this it might seek to persuade the British Government that you really cannot on the one hand accept a single market and on the other hand levy uncompetitive levels of taxation or duty on a particular product, in this case beer, wine or spirits. I would be very happy to invite the President-in-Office to come to one of the pubs in my constituency any time and I shall buy her a pint or a half or even a glass of wine if necessary and show her the sort of problems that pubs and off-licensees are having in South-East London, parts of Kent and so on as a result of the uncompetitive rates of duty levied by the British Government.
