Second Intergovernmental Conference on Strategies and Policies for Informatics
The Economic and Social Council,
Recalling its resolution 1978/43 of 1 August 1978 on the application of computer science and technology to development, in which it invited the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, in co-operation with the Director-General of the Intergovernmental Bureau for Informatics, to report to the Economic and Social Council on the results of the Intergovernmental Conference on Strategies and Policies for Informatics, held at Torremolinos, Spain, from 28 August to 6 September 1978,
Recalling also its resolution 1979/73 of 3 August 1979, in which it invited the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, in co-operation with the Intergovernmental Bureau for Informatics,, to continue to carry out programmes adopted by them in support of the recommendations of the Intergovernmental Conference on Strategies and Policies for Informatics,
Recalling further its resolution 1981/52 of 22 July 1981, in which it took note of the decision of the General Assembly of the Intergovernmental Bureau for Informatics, to convene a second intergovernmental conference on strategies and policies for informatics at Havana in June 1983,
Having considered the report of the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization on the Second Intergovernmental Conference on Strategies and Policies for Informatics and having heard the oral report of the representative of the Intergovernmental Bureau for Informatics,
Emphasizing the crucial importance of informatics for the development of all countries and the need to assist the developing countries in their efforts to apply its results for the economic and social development, and conscious of the importance of a Second Intergovernmental Conference on Strategies and Policies for Informatics for that purpose,
Gratified by the consultations between the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the Director-General of the Intergovernmental Bureau for Informatics, regarding co-operation for the holding of the Conference, which has been postponed by the interested parties,
1. Takes note with appreciation of the report of the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the oral report of the representative of the Intergovernmental Bureau for Informatics on the Second Intergovernmental Conference on Strategies and Policies for Informatics;
Invites the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the Director-General of the Intergovernmental Bureau for Informatics to continue the consultations, with a view to determining the most appropriate arrangements for co-operation, within the framework of the relations existing between the two organizations, so as to guarantee the full success of the Conference.
