Exchange of information on the activities of the Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs between the Commission for Social Development and the Commission on the Status of Women

The Economic and Social Council,

Expressing the view that the Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs of the Department of International Economic and Social Affairs should, at the same time as it is pursuing its group-specific mandates, pay special attention, inter alia, to popular participation, local-level action and social welfare policies, in order to make an appropriate contribution to the work of the United Nations system in the area of the social effects of development for the fulfilment of overall development objectives,

Recalling the responsibilities that have been given to the Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs in the follow-up to the International Year of Disabled Persons and the World Assembly on Aging, and in the preparations for the International Youth Year, the World Conference to Review and Appraise the Achievements of the United Nations Decade for Women and the Seventh United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders,

1. Recognizes the necessity to exchange information on the activities of the Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs between the Commission for Social Development and the Commission on the Status of Women;

2. Reaffirms the need for an overview of the social aspects of the development activities of the United Nations by the Commission for Social Development;

3. Endorses the continuing efforts of the Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs in developing a conceptual framework for its social development activities;

4. Requests the Secretary-General to include in the progress report to the Commission for Social Development on the biennial work programme information on the activities of the Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs;

5. Requests the Secretary-General to develop and maintain close collaboration between the work of the Commission for Social Development and that of the Commission on the Status of Women through the exchange of their reports in order, in particular, to ensure the social integration of women in society in a way beneficial to both women and society at large.
