Fortieth anniversary of the United Nations in 1985

The Economic and Social Council,

Recalling General Assembly decision 38/455 of 20 December 1983 on the commemoration of the fortieth anniversary of the United Nations in 1985,

Considering that the economic and social sectors of the United Nations system should contribute effectively to the observance of the anniversary,

1. Decides that, at the second regular session of 1985 of the Economic and Social Council, in the context of the general debate, special attention should be devoted to an assessment of the role of the United Nations in promoting international economic and social co-operation and to the consideration of ways of strengthening the role of the Organization and of further enhancing its effectiveness in this regard, and calls upon the Secretary-General to ensure that appropriate preparations are made for these discussions;

2. Recommends that the regional commissions and other subsidiary bodies of the Council and the specialized agencies and other organizations of the United Nations system should take full cognizance of the fortieth anniversary of the United Nations and participate actively in its observance;

3. Invites the competent intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations in consultative status with the Council to develop appropriate activities in support of the anniversary.
