Report of the Committee for Programme and Co-ordination
The Economic and Social Council,
Having considered the report of the Committee for Programme and Co-ordination on the work of its twenty-eighth session,
Recalling the provisions of Chapters IX and X of the Charter of the United Nations and, in particular, the role of the Economic and Social Council in co-ordination in the economic and social fields within the United Nations system,
Reaffirming the importance of the programming and co-ordinating functions carried out by the Committee for Programme and Co-ordination as the main subsidiary organ of the Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly for planning, programming and co-ordination,
Noting the importance of the additional responsibilities in the budgetary process assigned to the Committee for Programme and Co-ordination by the General Assembly in its resolution 41/213 of 19 December 1986,
Recognizing that the medium-term plan should continue to serve as the principal policy directive of the United Nations and, inter alia, as a tool for co-ordination in the economic and social fields,
Recognizing also that programme performance reports, programme evaluations and cross-organizational programme analyses are significant instruments for promoting efficiency and integrating the programming and co-ordination processes,
1. Takes note with appreciation of the report of the Committee for Programme and Co-ordination on the work of its twenty-eighth session, and endorses the conclusions and recommendations contained therein;
2. Authorizes the Committee, subject to established procedure, to resume its twenty-eighth session from 6 to 19 September 1988 in order to consider those pending items of the agenda indicated in the Committee's report;
3. Requests the Secretary-General to ensure that the documentation necessary for the Committee to complete its work is provided in good time.
