World Decade for Cultural Development

The Economic and Social Council,

Recalling General Assembly resolution 41/187 of 8 December 1986, in which the Assembly proclaimed the period 1988-1997 the World Decade for Cultural Development, to be observed under the auspices of the United Nations and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization,

Noting that, in addition to the regional meetings listed in the report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the National Commissions for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in the Arab States met in Nouakchott, Mauritania, in June 1989 to co-ordinate their efforts to implement the Decade,

1. Takes note of the report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization on the progress of the World Decade for Cultural Development during the period 1988-1989;

2. Invites Member States, intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations to strengthen their efforts, as appropriate, in the implementation of the Plan of Action for the World Decade for Cultural Development;

3. Requests the Secretary-General, in co-operation with the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, to take the measures necessary to reinforce the co-ordination of the activities undertaken by the organizations of the United Nations system in support of the Decade through the Administrative Committee on Co-ordination;

such measures might include the establishment of a steering committee, if appropriate.
