The European Parliament,
A. appalled by the murder of Mr Chapour Bakhtiar, a prominent exile and opponent of the Iranian regime,
B. believing that there are grounds for suspecting that he was murdered by agents of the Iranian Government,
C. recalling also the assassination in Geneva in 1990 of Dr Kazen Rajavi, a leading exile and opponent of the Iranian regime, which was also linked to agents of the regime according to the findings of the Geneva Police Tribunal made public on 31 July 1991,
D. deploring the fact that some Governments of Member States seem willing to overlook the criminal actions of the Iranian Government in the pursuit of diplomatic or commercial advantage,
1. Condemns those responsible for this brutal murder;
2. Expresses its profound sympathy for the family and supporters of Mr Bakhtiar;
3. Insists once again on the need for all European and democratic governments to cooperate in preventing and punishing terrorist crimes;
4. Urges the French authorities to be rigorous in their pursuit of the criminals;
5. Warns the Iranian Government that the Community and its citizens cannot tolerate murder in its territory plotted by foreign governments and that if it is established that Mr Bakhtiar was murdered by Iranian agents sanctions will have to be taken;
6. Condemns any attempt to appease governments guilty of terrorist attacks;
7. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council, EPC and the Government of Iran.
