Text adopted on 9.4.92
The European Parliament,
- having regard to certain firms' multinational strategy of evading the ban on Sunday working by increasing their activity in those service sectors where Sunday working is permitted on the grounds of providing essential supplies,
- having regard to the proposal for a directive on certain aspects of the organization of working time,
A. whereas everyone must be released from their everyday work at least one day per week in order to spend time with their family and friends,
B. whereas this is possible only if everyone can be released from their work responsibilities on the same day,
1. Calls on the Council to adopt the directive on the organization of working time;
2. Expects the Commission to take the measures necessary to ensure that no work is done in general on Sundays and public holidays except in particular areas of work relating to health, transport, catering, essential supplies and public order and security, and except where different rules are agreed upon between management and workforce on the grounds of pressing practical production requirements with the consent of the competent authorities;
3. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, Commission and the governments of the Member States.
