Resolution on the consequences of the referendum in Denmark for the Treaty of 7 February 1992
The European Parliament,
-having regard to the outcome of the referendum organized in Denmark on 2 June 1992,
-having regard to the conclusions of the special meeting of the Council of 4 June 1992,
A.determined to continue the process of establishing the European Union,
1.Notes the negative outcome of the referendum organized in Denmark for the ratification of the Treaty on European Union and, while respecting this vote, regrets the outcome thereof;
2.Is determined that the process of establishing European Union should proceed without delay and hopes that Denmark will be in a position to return to the fold as soon as possible;
3.Urges the Member States to ratify the Treaty of Maastricht without delay in view of its importance for the future of the Community;
4.Calls therefore on the Member States which have begun the process of ratification to lay down as soon as possible the conditions enabling the Treaty of Maastricht to enter into force on 1 January 1993 for those Member States which have deposited their instruments of ratification;
5.Cautions against any attempt to reopen negotiations on the Maastricht Treaty, whatever the solution eventually explored with Denmark;
6.Reaffirms that a deepening of European Union remains necessary, under which, in particular, the democratic deficit will be eliminated;
7.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the European Council, the Council, the national governments and parliaments and the Commission.
