RESOLUTION B3-0769, 0794, 0800, 0813, 0823, 0830 AND 0834/92

Resolution on on military repression in Thailand

The European Parliament,

A.saluting the courage of the thousands of Thais who defied the troops obeying the unelected General Suchinda Krapayon,

B.shocked by the news that according to independent sources, several hundreds of people were killed, whereas government sources state that only 41 people died,

C.recognizing the positive constitutional role of the King of Thailand which finally resulted in the resignation of General Suchinda, but noting that the armed forces continue to wield much power both within and outside parliament,

D.whereas, on 23 May, an amnesty was granted to all those who had been involved in the massacres,

1.Strongly condemns the bloody repression ordered by the Thai military regime and declares its solidarity with the democrats and the families of the victims;

2.Welcomes the setting up of an independent investigation into the massacre and calls for those responsible to be brought to justice and sentenced;

3.Demands the cancellation of the arrest warrants issued for the seven leading pro-democracy figures;

4.Calls on the Member States to assist the recent favourable developments that may free Thai democracy from military interference and secure full respect for human rights;

5.Urges its delegation to ASEAN to make the sympathies of the European Parliament clear in their meetings with Thai parliamentarians;

6.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council, the ministers meeting in EPC, the Government of Thailand the Secretary-General of ASEAN.
