RESOLUTION B3-1465/92
The European Parliament,
A. having regard to the news that reactor No. 3 at the Chernobyl power station has been brought back into service,
B. whereas the RBMK reactors used at Chernobyl do not provide the minimum safety guarantees required by the Community,
C. whereas the IAEA task force itself does not consider it possible to improve the safety guarantees provided by this type of reactor,
D. whereas the Chernobyl reactors can only provide safety guarantees if they are shut down,
E. whereas this type of reactor should be withdrawn from service in 1993,
F. whereas the Ukraine justifies the use of the reactor by its obligation to comply with its supply contract,
1. Calls for the immediate shut-down of the reactor;
2. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council and Commission, the governments of the Member States and the government of the Ukraine.
