Hurricane Charlie

RESOLUTION B3-1441/92

The European Parliament,

A. having regard to the damage caused on the island of Terceira in the Azores by Hurricane Charlie at the end of September,

B. whereas fishermen were particularly badly hit, especially those from the port of S o Mateus, in the Angra district,

C. whereas the destruction of 40% of Terceira's covered fishing vessels has resulted in damage amounting to 220 000 000 escudos (ECU 38.5 m),

D. whereas the cost of the 120 fishermen affected being laid off is estimated at almost 500 000 000 escudos (ECU 87.4 m), with repercussions on the income of a third of the population of St. Mateus,

1. Regrets what has happened;

2. Calls on the Commission to make available the funds required to alleviate the effects of the disaster and allow the fishermen and others affected to return to work;

3. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission and the government of the Republic of Portugal.
