RESOLUTION B3-1428/92
The European Parliament,
A. expressing its grave distress at the suffering caused by the earthquake which killed hundreds of people in Cairo on 12 October 1992,
B. whereas the districts most severely hit were the poorest parts of the city; whereas 700 schools were destroyed and a further 500 will present a risk if they are not repaired,
C. whereas many dwellings are in danger of collapsing in the near future,
D. whereas the Egyptian authorities have appealed for aid in restoring buildings of historical and cultural importance which form part of the Pharaonic, Islamic and Coptic cultural heritage,
1. Calls on the Member States to provide aid to build housing for the homeless and schools for children whose schooling has been interrupted;
2. Calls on the Member States to second experts and technicians to help with the restoration of buildings of historic and cultural importance;
3. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council, the governments of the Member States and the Egyptian Government.
