RESOLUTION B3-1579/92

The European Parliament,

- recalling its resolution of 12 June 1992 on the rights of the Kurdish people and past policy statements on the sufferings of the Kurds of Iraq,

A. deeply concerned at the present plight of the population of Northern Iraq, who are still acutely affected by the results of past Iraqi military operations and by shortages of supplies,

B. profoundly disturbed by reports of deaths, injuries and damage to property, inflicted on Iraqi Kurdish villages,

1. Calls upon the Turkish authorities to cease military operations in Iraqi Kurdistan and withdraw their forces;

2. Urges the Turkish Government and the guerillas active in eastern Turkey to bring armed hostilities to an end and to achieve a solution to the Kurdish problem by peaceful means;

3. Draws attention to the desperate needs of the Iraqi Kurds for secure supply lines;

4. Appeals to all parties involved in the region to refrain from actions likely to add to the suffering of the people of Northern Iraq and to ensure that deliveries of essential requirements to them are fully maintained;

5. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, Council, EPC, the Government of Turkey, and the representatives of all Kurdish groups.
