RESOLUTION B3-1573/92
The European Parliament,
- recalling its previous resolutions on the application of Islamic justice,
- recalling its resolutions concerning the application of Sharia law within the constitutional framework of Pakistan,
- recalling its resolutions on the death penalty,
- recalling its dedication to human rights throughout the world,
1. Deplores the sentencing to death by Iranian religious authorities of Salman Rushdie for the publication of a book;
2. Deplores the doubling by the Iranian authorities of the bounty for the murder of Salman Rushdie;
3. Deplores the death sentence imposed, following the due process of law, on Gul Masih in Pakistan based on oral evidence for blasphemy against Mohammed;
4. Urges the Iranian authorities to have regard to their role in the new world order;
5. Notes that the case of Gul Masih is under appeal and urges clemency;
6. Requests the United Nations to undertake a register of death sentences passed or carried out on religious grounds;
7. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the relevant governments and to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
