Resolution on violation of human rights in Cuba

The European Parliament,

A. having regard to its previous resolutions,

B. whereas Sebastian Arcos Bergnes has been sentenced to four years and eight months imprisonment for denouncing human rights abuses and violations in Cuba,

C. whereas Pablo Reyes Martínez has been accused of distributing 'enemy propaganda', the term used in Cuba for denunciations of human rights violations,

D. whereas José Luis Pujol has been sentenced for contempt on the grounds that he wrote a private letter setting out his disagreements with Fidel Castro,

E. whereas many other political prisoners, whereas Fernando Velázquez, Gabriel Aguado and Jorge Pomar are being subjected to pressure of all kinds,

F. whereas Mariela de los Rios Cruz and Thais Pujo Acosta have requested political asylum in Spain, and have denounced the situation of political prisoners in Cuba,

G. whereas it is aware of many other disgraceful abuses suffered by citizens whose names it does not wish to make public in order to avoid exposing them to further suffering,

1. Calls on the President of the Cuban State Council to release all those serving sentences for activities recognized as legitimate by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and international conventions on civil and political rights and economic, social and cultural rights;

2. States its wish to cooperate in normalizing political and economic life in Cuba as soon as the Cuban government makes moves towards fully recognizing the rights acknowledged in the declarations and conventions referred to above;

3. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission and the President of the Cuban State Council.
