RESOLUTION B3-1742 and 1743/92
Resolution on the disappearance of Raoul Wallenberg
The European Parliament,
A. recalling the debt humanity owes to Raoul Wallenberg,
B. whereas, since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the archives of the KGB are under the control of the Russian Government,
C. having regard to contradictory statements made about the fate of Mr Wallenberg by the Soviet authorities,
D. having regard to the evidence that Mr Wallenberg was seen alive in 1956 although the Soviet Government claimed he had died in the Lubianka prison in Moscow nine years previously,
E. drawing attention to the cases of two Americans, Mr Hamilton and Mr Semko, the Bulgarian, Mr Lewaneski, and the Pole, Mr Struginski, who have been discovered alive having been detained by the Soviets for 30, 47, 47 and 51 years respectively,
F. having regard to its resolution of 17 May 1990 on the fate of Raoul Wallenberg and Vilmos Langfelder,
1. Insists that the development of good relations between Russia and the Community and its Member States requires openness and candour about the crimes of the past;
2. Recognizes the good done when President Yeltsin revealed the truth about the Katyn massacre and the shooting down of the Korean airliner;
3. Calls on the Russian Government to allow representatives of the Wallenberg family, the International Committee of Inquiry into the Fate and Whereabouts of Raoul Wallenberg and the Swedish Government to have access to all the documents concerned with the cases of Raoul Wallenberg and his driver Vilmos Langfelder;
4. Calls on European Political Cooperation to take up this matter with the Russian Government;
5. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, EPC, the Commission and the Governments of Russia and Sweden.
