Resolution on the trial of Xanana Gusmâo

The European Parliament,

A.whereas the leader of the resistance in East Timor, Xanana Gusmâo, is being held by the Indonesian authorities,

B.whereas those authorities have announced that Xanana Gusmâo will shortly be tried for sedition, punishable by death or life imprisonment,

C.recalling its earlier resolutions on the situation in East Timor and in particular that of 17 December 1992Minutes of that Sitting, Part II, Item 8(d) ,

1.Calls for the immediate release of Xanana Gusmâo and all the other Timorese political prisoners;

2.Urges Indonesia to ensure that Xanana Gusmâo can benefit from all the independent legal assistance to which any person detained is entitled;

3.Warns Indonesia again of the likely consequences, in terms of its relations with the European Community, of repeated violations of human rights and international law;

4.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, EPC, the Commission, the governments of the Member States, the UN Secretary-General and the Government of Indonesia.
