RESOLUTION B3-0543, 0549 and 0566/93

The European Parliament,

A.incensed by the political assassination in Rome on 16 March 1993 of Mr Mohammad Hossein Naghdi, representative of the Iranian National Resistance Council in Italy, by agents of the Teheran régime,

B.concerned at the number of terrorist acts carried out in 1992 via Iranian diplomatic missions against Iranian nationals and active members of the Iranian resistance,

C.noting the report of 28 January 1993 by Mr Reynaldo Galindo Pohl, special rapporteur of the Commission on Human Rights, pointing out that the human rights situation in Iran is far from improved and that the Iranian régime has done nothing to comply with international laws on human rights, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,

D.recalling the many resolutions adopted over the last thirteen years by the European Parliament and the competent bodies of the UN on the serious human rights violations in Iran,

E.deeply concerned by statements made by officials of the Iranian regime which are in contradiction with international law and the Universal Declaration on Human Rights,

1.Condemns the use of state terrorism by the Iranian régime and the assassination of Naghdi;

2.Calls upon European Political Cooperation to condemn the serious and systematic violation of human rights in Iran, in particular the increasing number of extrajudicial executions and arbitrary mass arrests of discontented citizens who take part in demonstrations;

3.Stresses the need for cooperation between democratic countries to prevent and punish acts of political terrorism against the opposing parties in Iran;

4.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council, the Iranian National Resistance Council, the Governments of the Member States and the Government of Iran.
