RESOLUTION B3-0569/93
The European Parliament,
A.concerned by the constitutional irregularities affecting the democratic situation in Peru,
B.recalling that the principles of the rule of law, pluralist democracy and respect for basic rights and public freedoms represent the essence of our political convictions,
C.whereas the journalists Enrique ZILLERI, Gisela GUTARRA, Dánilo QUIJANO, Pedro YAURI, Magno SOSA and César HILDEBRANDT, among others, have been imprisoned without any guarantees or have been convicted for criticizing the government or else have had to flee the country owing to the threats they received in the wake of the coup d'état carried out by President Alberto FUJIMORI on 5 April 1992,
1.Expresses its disquiet at the continuation of serious human rights violations in Peru;
2.Calls for the abolition of the special courts and the immediate freeing of all the journalists imprisoned for the crime of expressing their opinions and requests that exiles be permitted to return to Peru without fear of reprisal;
3.Calls on the Commission and European Political Cooperation to obtain guarantees from the Government of Peru that the rights to freedom of expression and information will be fully respected;
4.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council, European Political Cooperation and the Government of Peru.
