RESOLUTION B3-0530/93
Resolution on the need to ensure the delivery of supplies to the population of Tuzla (Bosnia) by reopening the town's airport under the protection of the United Nations Protection Force
The European Parliament,
A.whereas the town of Tuzla is a living symbol of Bosnian resistance to the policy of 'ethnic cleansing', since it has managed to keep the peace between the various nationalities by means of a town council headed by a coalition of civic and democratic forces,
B.whereas since the beginning of April 1992 Tuzla has been under siege from the militia of Karadzic and the Belgrade army, which considerably limits its possibilities of receiving supplies,
C.whereas the influx of refugees means that Tuzla and the surrounding district now accommodate about 800 000 people,
D.whereas the airport of Tuzla is still closed to international humanitarian aid traffic, although it offers a higher level of safety than Sarajevo airport,
1.Calls on the Member States to take steps to promote the reopening of Tuzla airport under the control of the UNPROFOR and the official municipal authorities;
2.Calls on the Member States and the Commission to support the measures taken by various non-governmental organizations in the Community for the benefit of Tuzla and its democratic administration;
3.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council, the Member States, the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the official authorities of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Tuzla.
