Resolution on the arrest and maltreatment of Mr Vuk Draskovic and his wife

The European Parliament,
A.shocked by the arrest, imprisonment and brutal physical assault on Mr Vuk Draskovic, leader of the Movement for the Renewal of Serbia (SPO) on 2 June 1993 in Belgrade,
B.shocked by the arrest of Mrs Draskovic and of several SPO deputies on the same occasion,
C.gravely concerned by the reports of the police assault on Mr Draskovic which led to his jaw being broken, an internal haemorrhage as well as multiple bruises,
D.recognizing that there are many courageous Serbs who struggle for democracy in their own country and for peace with their neighbours and that Mr Draskovic is the leading politician among them,
E.calling attention to the demands of President Mitterrand and of the Danish, Swedish and American Governments for the release of Mr Draskovic and his wife,
1.Demands the immediate release of Mr and Mrs Draskovic and of all the SPO deputies who were arrested with them;
2.Condemns the brutal violence of the police and the methods used by Mr Milosevic;
3.Demands that EPC makes the strongest protests to Mr Milosevic about these incidents;
4.Warns that the establishment of a dictatorship in Serbia under Mr Milosevic will lead to the kind of gross violations of human rights already perpetrated on the Albanians of Kosovo and other minorities in Serbia being extended to Serbs themselves;
5.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council, EPC, the Government of Serbia and the SPO.
