Detention of Kuwaitis by the Government of Iraq

Resolution on the continued detention of Kuwaitis and other non-Iraqis by the Government of Iraq

The European Parliament,

A.recalling the obligation of the Iraqi Government under UN Security Council resolutions to release all those arrested by the Iraqi Government during its illegal occupation of Kuwait,

B.recalling the special obligations on Member States who took part in the Gulf War to ensure that the terms of the ceasefire are respected,

C.drawing attention to the Amnesty International report, which identified 140 individuals, of whom 129 are Kuwaiti and the remainder come from Bahrain, Iran, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Syria or are stateless, whose fate is unknown since they were arrested by the Iraqis,

D.drawing attention to the Kuwaiti Government's claim that over 650 Kuwaitis are still held prisoner in Iraq,

E.recalling its previous resolutions on the human rights situation in Iraq,

1.Demands that the Iraqi Government release without further delay all people arrested during the Iraqi Government's illegal occupation of Kuwait;

2.Calls on EPC, acting under the authority of UN Security Council resolutions and the terms of the ceasefire, to do all in their power to help the Kuwaiti and other Arab governments to trace the people who have disappeared and to ensure their release;

3.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council, EPC, the Member States of the Security Council, the Governments of Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Syria, the Secretary-General of the UN and the Government of Iraq.
