Resolution on the health situation in Haiti
The European Parliament,
A.noting with satisfaction the progress made in Haiti towards the solution of the constitutional problems that stemmed from the overthrow and enforced exile of President J.B. Aristide,
B.whereas a recent joint report of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) refers to the disastrous consequences of the embargo for the health of the least privileged sections of the Haitian population,
C.whereas Haiti does not itself have the resources to cope with a situation of this magnitude and whereas the international community needs to get to grips with Haiti's health problems without delay,
D.whereas the resumption of general technical cooperation is likely to suffer unavoidable delays, despite the particular gravity of the situation,
1.Calls on the Commission and the governments of the EC Member States to take concerted action immediately to ensure that Haiti receives urgent, rapid and massive medical assistance;
2.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, EPC and the Government of Haiti.
