Crisis in the market in fishery products

Resolution on the crisis in the market for fishery products

The European Parliament,

-having regard to its resolution of 22 April 1993 on the crisis in the market in fishery products,

-having regard to the Commission's report to the Council on Community arrangements for the importation of fish,

-having regard to the action taken by the Community in 1991 to restore stability to the salmon market following massive dumping on the Community market by Norway,

A.whereas the Community has until now been unable to take effective measures to stabilize the market in fish products which has been in crisis since the beginning of the year,

B.whereas salmon production is a major employer both in the West of Ireland and the Highlands of Scotland which are among the most peripheral regions of the Community,

C.whereas there has recently been a sudden and catastrophic fall of 50% in the price of salmon on the European market;

D.whereas this crisis is due to dumping by Norway, itself caused by a surplus in production,

E.concerned at the knock-on effect of the salmon crisis on the market for fish as a whole,

1.Condemns the renewed use of the practice of dumping of Norwegian salmon on the Community market which has serious consequences for Community production;

2.Calls on the Commission to bring forward measures urgently to stabilize the market situation and prevent dumping of salmon on the Community market;

3.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, Council and the governments of the Member States.
