Resolution on the danger of a resumption of executions in Turkey
The European Parliament,
A.aware that as a result of votes in the Grand National Assembly no death sentences have been carried out in Turkey for ten years,
B.distressed by the approval of the death sentence on Mr Seyfettin Uzundi by the Judicial Commission of the Grand National Assembly,
C.fearing that if this sentence is approved by the Grand National Assembly itself, it will lead to further executions,
D.conscious of the hardening of attitudes caused by the conflict in south-east Turkey, the PKK terrorism there, in other parts of Turkey and abroad, and the brutal methods sometimes used by the security forces; believing that executions will make a settlement of the conflict even more difficult,
1.Appeals to all Members of the Grand National Assembly not to vote for the execution of Mr Seyfettin Uzundi;
2.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council, the President of the Grand National Assembly, the Chairman of its Human Rights Committee and the leaders of all political parties in the Grand National Assembly.
