Resolution on storms in Galicia

The European Parliament,

A.having regard to the recent continual storms in the north of Spain, particularly in Galicia,

B.having regard to the effect of the storms on various sectors, notably the risk of flooding and the impact on coastal fishing,

1.Calls on the Commission to carry out a detailed study of the effects of the storm;

2.Calls for Community action in the field of river infrastructure to avoid the potential risk of flooding caused by rising river levels;

3.Calls for a study of the impact on the fisheries sector and the measures to be adopted, particularly as regards coastal fishing fleets, which have been confined to harbour for several days, imposing a strain on family budgets and exacerbating an already worrying situation by creating a crisis in this sector in the general climate of economic recession;

4.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, to the Council, to the Spanish Government and to the Administration of the Xunta of Galicia.
