Resolution on the ravages caused by torrential rainfall in the Prefecture of Messini

The European Parliament,

A.having regard to the widespread damage to crops caused by the unprecedented storms in the communes of Avrami, Petalidi, Analipsi, Velika, Strefi, Longa, Nea Koroni, Akritochori and Finikounta in the Prefecture of Messini on 9 January,

B.whereas more than 100 hectares of crops were destroyed, including more than 10 hectares of greenhouse plants, 1500 olive trees, 700 fruit trees and 2.1 hectares of raisin vines were uprooted and livestock also suffered considerably,

C.whereas farmhouses, storehouses, pumping plants and the irrigation network also suffered considerable damage and many tonnes of fruit and seeds were washed away and lost,

D.whereas most of the inhabitants of these areas belong to the farming community,

1.Expresses its solidarity with the farmers and stockbreeders in the areas in question;

2.Calls on the Commission, in cooperation with the Greek regional and national authorities, to provide aid as a matter of urgency to repair the damage and relieve the plight of the inhabitants of these regions with the help of the special resources set aside to provide aid in the event of natural disasters;

3.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council, the Greek Government and the regional authorities in the Prefecture of Messini.
