Resolution on the situation of the Romanian human rights activist, Dr Baracu
The European Parliament,
A.having regard to the disconcerting situation of the President of the Association for Inter-Ethnic Dialogue in Romania, Dr Baracu, who is seeking to encourage the different ethnic groups in Transylvania to live side by side on an equal footing and, because of his position, is subjected to repeated death threats and slander by extremist members of the Party of National Unity of Romania,
B.whereas any society is enriched by maintaining a system in which different ethnic groups live side by side and whereas any one working towards this goal must be protected from attacks by nationalists,
1.Stresses, in particular, the challenge to be met in resisting any form of nationalist force that wishes to destroy the multi-ethnic nature of a society and calls on the Romanian authorities to investigate the case of Dr Baracu, to protect him from attack and to bring those threatening and terrorizing him to account;
2.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe and the Romanian Government.
