Resolution on the flood damage in Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia
The European Parliament,
A.distressed at the disastrous flooding in Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia last weekend and the resultant loss of human life,
B.having regard to the serious damage caused to farms, industrial undertakings, the environment (where much harm was done, inter alia, by escaping heating fuel and diesel) and households,
C.having regard to the heavy losses in the transport and general supplies infrastructure sectors,
1.Expresses its sincere commiserations with the families bereaved by the disaster;
2.Calls on the Commission to carry out an assessment of the damage, and to take immediate measures aimed at alleviating the suffering of the people affected by the disaster, helping farms and other commercial undertakings and supporting the local authorities in their efforts to repair local infrastructures;
3.Calls on the Commission to work towards improving early warning systems and equipment (e.g. heating installations), banning house-building in flood-prone valleys and preventing the development of the Elbe-Saale region;
4.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council, the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Governments of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
