Resolution on the floods in the Mekong delta

The European Parliament,

A.having regard to the devastating rise of water levels in the Mekong delta,

B.whereas these floods have caused human as well as material losses, killing more than 175 people in a month and destroying more than 10 000 hectares of rice fields at the time of the summer-autumn harvest,

C.whereas this catastrophe could seriously affect the performance of the Vietnamese economy in 1994,

D.whereas this disaster may increase the strong inflationary pressures in Vietnam,

1.Calls on the Commission to provide a programme of emergency aid to help the affected areas by repairing the damage;

2.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council and the Government of Vietnam.
