Resolution on the assassination of the Basque politician Gregorio Ordóñez

The European Parliament,

A.whereas in San Sebastian (Spain) on 23 January 1995 the ETA terrorist group assassinated Mr Gregorio Ordóñez, chairman of the People's Party of Guipúzcoa, member of the Basque Parliament and deputy mayor of San Sebastian,

B.whereas the assassination has been unanimously condemned by all democratic forces and has provoked the strongest revulsion and contempt for the assassins,

C.whereas the death of Gregorio Ordóñez bears witness to the greatness of a life devoted to the principle of democratic and peaceful coexistence,

1.Condemns emphatically this assassination and the activities of the ETA terrorist group as well as the actions of those who support and justify such activities;

2.Expresses its sympathy to all the victims of terrorism;

3.Calls on the institutions of the Union, the national governments and the citizens of Europe to combat terrorism as resolutely as possible and unremittingly, and for police and judicial cooperation between the countries of the Union to be stepped up even further to prevent terrorist activities and bring to justice the perpetrators of such activities;

4.Encourages the Basque people to keep up its campaign of peaceful opposition to violence and terrorism;

5.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission, the governments of the Member States, the Basque Government, the Basque parliament and the municipal government of San Sebastian.
