Resolution on fires in the occupied territory of Cyprus
The European Parliament,
-having regard to the devastating fires which have broken out in the territory of the Republic of Cyprus occupied by the Turkish armed forces,
-having regard to the incalculable damage caused by the destruction of forests, homes and archaeological sites,
-having regard to the refusal of the Turkish occupying powers to allow the legitimate authorities of the Republic of Cyprus to carry out fire-fighting operations,
-whereas it has repeatedly condemned the occupation and illegal presence of Turkish armed forces in northern Cyprus,
1.Calls on the Commission to provide immediate material and financial assistance to the Government of Cyprus;
2.Calls on the Council and Commission to bring pressure to bear on the Turkish occupying authorities to allow the Government of Cyprus to assist in extinguishing the fires and repairing the damage caused;
3.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Council, the Commission, the Turkish Government and the Government of the Republic of Cyprus.
