Decision on the unblocking of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee

The European Parliament,

A.whereas the operation of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee was frozen at the request of its European members on 29 September 1994; whereas this freezing was reconfirmed on 15 December 1994,

B.recalling its demands for democratization in Turkey,

C.whereas the customs union agreement with Turkey should be subject to the assent procedure,

D.having regard to the unanimous request of its Foreign Affairs Committee to unfreeze the operation of the EU-Turkey Joint Committee,

1.Considers that recent events in Turkey demonstrate the need for a dialogue with that country regarding Parliament's demands for democratization;

2.Decides to unblock the operation of its joint committee, and instructs it to resume its work forthwith.
