Resolution on the devastation of the island of Luzon in the Philippines by Hurricane Angela

The European Parliament,

A.whereas on 3 November 1995 the island of Luzon in the Philippines was completely devastated by Hurricane Angela,

B.whereas several hundred persons have been killed or have disappeared and thousands have been injured,

C.whereas Hurricane Angela has destroyed over 300 000 houses in the region and over 250 000 people are homeless,

D.whereas a large number of bridges and roads have been destroyed by the hurricane, as have important agricultural and telecommunication infrastructures,

1.Extends its sympathy to the families of the victims and the Government of the Philippines;

2.Calls on the Commission, in view of the scale of the disaster, to provide significant emergency aid to those affected and to the Philippine authorities, so as to enable them to rebuild all the private and public property destroyed by the hurricane;

3.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission and to the Government of the Philippines.
