B4-1529/95
Resolution on the threatened deportation of Nigerians from the United Kingdom
The European Parliament,
A.having regard to the situation in Nigeria where, in the words of the British Prime Minister, 'judicial murders' were recently carried out,
B.drawing attention to the plight of Ade Onibiyo, aged 19, who has lived half his life in Great Britain and who is now threatened with deportation from the United Kingdom to Nigeria by the British Home Secretary,
C.pointing out that Ade Onibiyo's father, Abdu Onibiyo, was deported to Nigeria in late October, since when his family has heard nothing from him,
D.drawing attention also to the plight of Sutana Adesulure, also facing deportation to Nigeria, who arrived in the United Kingdom on his brother's passport having fled his country because, as a political activist, he feared for his life,
E.recalling that the British Home Secretary owes his existence to the fact that his father, a Romanian citizen, was granted asylum in the United Kingdom in 1938,
1.Insists that, whatever the legal technicalities, it is clearly a grave abuse of human rights to deport people to Nigeria at the present time, when there are grounds for supposing that they may be regarded as opposed to the present regime;
2.Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Commission, the Council and both Houses of Parliament in the United Kingdom.
