as you have seen in confradical party the press release issued by danilo. the general assembly voted with 70 in favour, 24 against and 42 abstension the incllusion of the itakian request on capital punishement in the agenda.kirghizistan spoke in the name of all CIS countries (cis meaning all former usrr countries)
after the vote singapore algeria iran and egypt expalined thier vote against.
then a second vote took place on which commettee will deal the issue.
the italian proposal that it should be the 3 commette (human rights ) got 69 votes in favour, 25 against 37 abstensions.
as you can see only 136 countries (out of 184) took part in the vote.
which means that our lobby and the extraordinary work of the whole italian mission was successffull in convincing most of the countries to abstain or eve n not to come.
the situation will be quite different in the third commette. and I am araid we have no or very little chances to have a good result on the substance.
of course the italian mission will do its best...... but.
as far as timing is concerned: apparently most of the countries wants to debate this issue as soon as possibile apparently at the end of this week or early next week
I had a meeting with the senegal ambassador chiarperson of the third commette: he is willing to help in trying to postpone at least to the week novembrer 28.... but it is not sure we will get this. in any case he has decided not to call the meeting of the bureau of the third conference immediately: presumably he will call this meeting on wednesday..... we will see.
