WEI: letter to the Nobel Peace Prize

Your Excellency XX

Nobel Peace Prize

Brussels, September 2, 1996

Your Excellency,

Wei Jingsheng, the most popular Chinese dissident, after having been imprisoned for 14 years, was condemned in 1995 to a new sentence of 15 years by the Peking authorities. From his family we learned that his state of health is growing worse.

As you can read in the presentation paper for his candidature for the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize, Wei Jingsheng is not only a symbol of the struggle for democracy and resistance to oppression by a totalitarian regime, but he is also a symbol of tolerance and dialogue.

Wei Jingsheng's candidature for the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize has been subscribed by hundreds of Nobel Prize graduates, University Professors, Parliamentarians and Government Members.

Although they are qualitatively very important, these adhesions to support Jingsheng's candidature will, in all probability, not be sufficient to induce the Nobel Prize Committee to honor Wei Jingsheng and his struggle for democracy and respect for fundamental rights in China.

For this reason, the Transnational Radical Party, in collaboration with Paris' Federation for Democracy in China, and with New York's Human Rights in China, decided to launch a campaign for Wei Jingsheng's candidature for the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize, in order to obtain thousands of adhesions among Nobel Peace Prize graduates, Parliamentarians and University Professors. Within a few weeks, already more than 300 Parliamentarians and University Professors had decided to support Wei's candidature.

Because Nobel Peace Prize Graduates are the first appointed to present a candidature, we take the liberty to ask you to support this initiative, which is more than a simple recognition of Wei Jingsheng as a person but could become a recognition for all those who in the loneliness of an uncertain "freedom" or in the silence of a prison or laogai, are struggling for a better future, for freedom and democracy in their own countries and their own people.

Confiding in your support, we would like to thank you for giving us your attention.

Sincerely yours,

Danilo QUINTO Olivier Dupuis

Treasurer General Secretary

Member of the European Parliament

* Transnational Radical Party's resume

The Radical Party is a political transnational and transidivisional cross-party international organization. In other words an organization that gathers citizens and parliamentarians from different national political affiliations who want to become engaged to some particular political campaigns. The TRP's political campaigns are: the universal abolition of death penalty; the institution of a permanent International Criminal Court; the revision in an antiprohibitionist way of the laws and international conventions concerning drugs; the question of communication and of linguistic democracy at a worldwide level and, of course, the freedom of Tibet and the democracy in China. The Radical Party is not participating in national, regional, local or partisan elections. It was recently granted a consultative status (Category 1) by the United Nations.
