Oggetto: Tribunale Penale Internazionale e diritti dell'uomo.

Considerata l'importanza del lavoro effettuato dal Tribunale ad hoc sull'ex Jugoslavia e i progressi conseguiti dal Comitato preparatorio delle Nazioni Unite, incaricato di elaborare un progetto di statuto del Tribunale penale internazionale, in seguito altresí alla risoluzione approvata in materia dal Parlamento europeo il 19 settembre u.s., non ritiene la Commissione europea che l'instaurazione di una giurisdizione penale internazionale costituisca una base importante per assicurare il rispetto e la promozione dei diritti dell'uomo e del diritto umanitario nel mondo?

Oggetto: International Criminal Court and human rights

The Commission believes that following the ad hoc Tribunals on the Former Republic of Yugoslavia and Rwanda, a permanent International Criminal Court should be established.

It would deal with serious violations of international humanitarian law, with gross violations of human rights and crimes against humanity perpetrated across the world.

The Commission welcomes the progress made in the elaboration by Preparatory Committee of the text of a statue for an International Criminal Court.

Through the relevant budget line established upon the initiative of the European Parliament, the Commission has given financial support to projects, which have been set up by non-governmental organisations for the promotion of the establishment of an Internationale Criminal Court. On this same basis the Commission is ready to support the activities of the permanent court as soon as it is established.
