To all representatives of the Tibetan Community in Switzerland

Budapest, January, 27th 1997.

Dear friends,

as you may already know, on March 9th and 10th, two important days will be dedicated for the freedom of Tibet. Two intensive days, rich in moments of partitipation, which could represent an important political step towards the opening of sino-tibetan negotiations, as H.H. the Dalai Lama has been costantly requesting for years from the international community. It's an appointment decided, since the Second World Conference of Tibet Support Groups that took place in Bonn in June last year, and that has been rielaborated during different meetings of all interested subjects, included tibetan communities.

We are already intensivly working to make possibile the arrival in those days of more as possible number of participants from all over Europe. Our goal is to bring to Geneva at least 15.000 people and due to that in different european countries first "registers" of participation are already to be opened.

However, I'm writing to you for an other reason, which is of a duble concern to what previously indicated. In Strasbourg, on January 16th and 17th took place a Seminar for organization particulars which has been attended by several representatives of TSGs and of the TRP, also by a representative of the Tibetan Community in Swizerland.

As we could understand from his speeches, there are difficulties in providing the participation of members of the tibetan community for the two days of demonstrations, with, therefore, the main objectiv to concentrate on the partecipation for one day only, wich is to be Monday, March 10th.

This decision due - I believe - to technical problems and difficulties, which we are trying to solve together with our friends of the TSG in Geneva, is much of our concerne and affecting us. The colours, the voice, the positive tension that the tibetan community was able to garantee in 1996 in Bruxelles, during the previous european demonstration, have brought to the good success of that demonstration. This year, we are not willing to take the responsability of representing the tibetan people, its requests and demands without its presency, without the 2.000 and more members of the tibetan community in Switzerland. We don't want it and we can not do it.

Therefore I ask you to change the decision, which in one first moment seemed to be overcomed and that suddenly has riemerged during the latest meeting in Strasbourg. I ask you to make possible your partecipation to both moments of the demonstration, and to be with us, with several Tibet Support Groups, and with more thousands of european citizens in Geneva on March 9th and obviously 10th.

Hoping to be able to see you marchin through the streets of Geneva heading the long row in the morning of the 9th, I'm using also this oportunity to wish all of you a good "losar".
