Subject: TIBET A World Unknown

I had found it difficult to respond to your original request for ideas on the Tibet issue, for it requires a little bit of self refelection.

First off, I live here in the U.S. where most of the population could not tell you where or what Tibet is. In the U.S. due to the isolationism of our information sources in our news and current media little attention has been given to the people of Tibet.

Part of the reason for this, is that money has become the primary motive for many in our society. This is what has blinded our leadership to Tibet's on going problem. This is also why our leadership decided not to tie human rights issues in China with trade issues. Unfortuantely this has given China a great deal of latitude in further instituting greater restrictions on personal freedoms.

This is also why the U.S. Media has not given Tibet the attention it requires. For it fears if it influences public opinion in favor of Tibet it will also interfere or possibly obstruct the free flow of trade to China, that so many businesses desire. Bottom line our country has decided a Positive image for Tibet is bad for business.

So why is it that we are so willing to give and fight for Human rights abuses in Yugosolovia, Haiti, Cuba, South Africa, etc... etc... Well part of the answer is the media attention it has recieved, it enabled the common U.S. citizen to relate. Sure it is fine to have the Dahli Lama visit the U.S., but that only tends to attract those that are already concerened about the issues of the people of Tibet. For now though that small group has appeared to be politicaly ineffective here in the U.S..

It is time for the people of Tibet to end this Cycle of Imprisonment. You must learn to use the tools that your captors use, such as Public Realtion Firms, The Media, Public Opinion, Sensationalism, Campaign Funding etc...

For example when the issue of Most Favored Nation trade status came up for China. China and its business associates hired P.R. and lobbying firms to help blind our politicians to Human rights abuses, so that trade and profit would overcome.

Because if the common U.S. citizen can't relate to the despiar of the Tibetan people, they will act as if the Tibetan people never existed.

You must learn to open our eye's, for once our eyes are open they will become engulfed in Tibet and our politicians then will be forced to come to terms with their policy making.

The American people have a heart the trick is finding it sometimes.

Right now though with China's trade surplus with the U.S., China is finding itself becoming overwhelmed with greed. This greed can become a powerful tool now, for if it comes between freedoms for the Tibetan People and another Billion dollars in trade surplus for the Chinese Government , we both know which one they will choose.

You may not find a more auspicious time in history then right now. You must strike while the morals of those in power are easy to define and predict. Physical Freedom in the cloak of tyranny will require not only inner strength but an active desire to have the dreams of the people of Tibet and their future children come to full realization.

The tools are there and whether you have come to realize it yet or not, the Captors of Tibet have handed them to you.

Sincerely,

Ralph Turchiano
